Successful Sister Act

Sisters Hannah and Ashley Perez— Ha-Ash — have recently released their first CD in Mexico. The sisters, with definite Crowley roots, are enjoying great success in Mexico and may soon re-record the CD for release in the United States. Above is a reproduction of the “official” Ha-Ash poster.

The sister act Ha-Ash, Mexican teenagers with Southwest Louisiana roots, have just released their first CD, named simply Ha-Ash. Sales are “just great,” according to Hanna Perez, 17, the Ha of Ha-Ash.
Hanna and sister Ashley, 16, live and record in Mexico under a contract with Sony. Their music is in Spanish, but it has a definite norteamericano slant to it. Even strains of the old Louisiana Hayride.
“We were both born in Lake Charles, and all we used to hear on the radio in Louisiana was country,” said Hanna in a phone interview. “Even after we moved to Mexico, our mother brought all her CDs with her, and so we grew up listening to and singing county music.”
The girls’ mother is the former Mathilda Mosa of Crowley. Their grandmother, Ann Mosa, still lives here, and they have relatives scattered all over the region.
The girls, who played Contraband Days in Lake Charles and the famous Angola Rodeo last year, have been concentrating on the CD since signing with Sony. The result — which could be re-recorded in English and released in the U..S. in a year or so — is an unusual rendering of the Nashville sound, plus American pop and rock, in Spanish. Both Hanna and Ashley play guitar, and Hanna also plays piano.
“It’s absolutely great to be able to share your dream with your sister,” said Hanna. “We get along like — well, like regular sisters.”
The girls’ careers are tracked on their website, www.ha-ash.com.
